Why Costa Rica? Costa Rica is a stable democratic country with a strong deaf community. Do deaf people in Costa Rica use sign language? Yes, they have their own sign language, called LESCO (Lengua de Señas de Costa Rica). You will learn LESCO during the summer at Gallaudet. LESCO and Costa Rican culture will be taught by Costa Rican deaf exchange students who will also serve as your mentors. Do I need to be proficient in Spanish to be eligible? You need to have completed at least two semesters of Elementary Spanish and one Intermediate Spanish course with a 'B' average or better. If you have never taken any Spanish courses, we will work with you to help you develop basic proficiency. Will I be able to function in Costa Rica with only a basic knowledge of Spanish? No, more preparation will be needed. You will also need to take an online reading course offered by Gallaudet during the spring semester and a summer immersion training at Gallaudet. Why should I apply to participate in this program? You will develop the functional proficiency in Spanish and the cultural sensitivity that will allow you to become more marketable to prospective employers. Will I receive credits for participating in the Costa Rican program? Yes, but you need to contact your VR and your Department Chair at your home institution to make sure that the credits will transfer. How will I pay for the program? You might be eligible to receive some VR support and financial aid. VR will most likely pay ONLY for fall tuition and for books. Interns are responsible for securing enough savings to be able to cover for the rest of the cost (approximately 4,000 for 4 weeks of room and board during summer training and 18 weeks in Costa Rica in the fall; for airfare and other expenses).
