Why Mexico? Mexico is a fascinating country with strong cultural and ecomonic ties to the United States. Do deaf people in Mexico use sign language? Yes, they have their own sign language, called LSM(Lengua de Señas de Mexico). You will learn LSM during the summer at Gallaudet and through your interaction with the Mexican deaf community during your internship. LSM and Mexican culture will be taught by Mexican deaf students who will also serve as your mentors. Do I need to be proficient in Spanish to be eligible? You need to have completed at least two semesters of Elementary Spanish and one Intermediate Spanish course with a 'B' average or better. If you have never taken any Spanish courses, we will work with you to help you achieve basic proficiency. Will I be able to function in Mexico with only a basic knowledge of Spanish? No, more preparation will be needed. You will also need to take an online reading course offered by Gallaudet during the spring semester and a summer immersion training at Gallaudet. Why should I apply to participate in this program? You will develop the functional proficiency in Spanish and the cultural sensitivity that will allow you to become more marketable to prospective employers. Will I receive credits for participating in the Mexicon program? Yes, but you need to contact your VR and your Department Chair at your home institution to make sure that the credits will transfer. How will I pay for the program? You might be eligible to receive some VR support and financial aid. VR will most likely pay ONLY for fall tuition and for books. Interns are responsible for securing enough savings to be able to cover for the rest of the cost (approximately $4,000 for room and board in the summer and 18 weeks in Mexico in the fall; for airfare and other expenses).
