| Welcome to the KidsWorld Deaf Net Weblink library on Transition. Transition, as defined by the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center, is a lifelong process through which individuals come to understand themselves as they relate to the world of work. It occurs through participation in a continuum of developmental activities available through both formal and informal experiences in and outside of institutions and agencies. Career development and transition in a comprehensive form is a community partnership effort involving the education system, the home and family structure, and business, industry, government and a variety of community agencies and organizations. This site contains annotated Web links related to transition and career development issues. Information that may be helpful to some or all of the community partners are organized into the following categories: Career Development, Job Center, Transition Issues for Disabled Students, School-to-Work Programs, Parents, and Resources.

It can be identified in phases from kindergarten through retirement. It may involve the identification of competencies and indicators which represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities students need to cope effectively with daily life, to make the transition to the next level of education, and to develop an educational plan to ensure their academic growth and development. This section includes ideas, strategies, and research about career development. Job Center The Job Center contains information about job opportunities -- at the national and state levels-- and the resources necessary to apply. An informed and involved family member can become a transition "mentor" who can greatly assist in enhancing the information gathering, self-determination, and decision-making skills of a family member.
